Beatrice has a secret. Several, in fact, and she keeps almost all of them to herself — a select few go to Mark, her best friend at school, usually on a Monday morning and usually at speed.
Every Sunday she goes out with her other best friend, who happens to be a Routemaster: the talking London Bus RM 168 via Waterloo. And every Sunday it becomes clear again that London is not the city everyone thinks it is.
A city that nobody knows still exists
The Bus shows her a ghostlike London full of secrets, illusions and traps. Its inhabitants are famous talking buildings, parks and tourist attractions — and every one of them has hopes, unfulfilled dreams and problems, exactly like she does.
In this volume Beatrice is captured by the sloppiest spies MI6 has ever fielded, helps a whimpering red telephone box solve the mysterious disappearance of her phone, and finally meets the Mayor of London, who is keeping two rather large secrets of his own. He is also planning to get rid of the old London Bus — which Beatrice takes personally.
