If you have picked up any volume in the series, you will have seen the line across the bottom of the cover: “Top Ten Children’s Books About London”, credited to London Mums Magazine.
It is the kind of endorsement that matters more than a starred review, because of who it comes from. London Mums is read by exactly the people the books are for: parents in this city, looking for something to read with a six-year-old that is not the same three titles everybody else is reading.
Why London keeps working as a setting
Because it is already full of characters. A red telephone box has a shape a child can draw from memory. The London Eye is a face waiting to happen. Beatrice’s London is not invented from nothing — it is the city outside the window with the volume turned up, which is why children who live here recognise it and children who do not want to visit.
